MacroFactor review: cost, free trial and who it is for
What the app costs in 2026, why there is no free version, which languages it supports and who will actually get the most out of it.
MacroFactor in 2026: cost, languages and an honest review
Published October 28, 2026 · By the Ember team
In short
MacroFactor costs $11.99 a month, $47.99 every six months or $71.99 a year in the US. On the French, Spanish and German App Stores, the annual plan is €73.99; in Norway it is 769 kr.
There is no free version: the publisher, Stronger By Science, offers a 7-day free trial, then a subscription that unlocks every feature, with no ads.
The app is available in English and Japanese only. A German version has been announced; French, Spanish and Norwegian have not.
Its standout feature is an algorithm that calculates your energy expenditure from what you eat and how your weight changes, then adjusts calories and macros every week. The strength training app, MacroFactor Workouts, is sold separately (bundle of both apps: $89.99 a year).
Users rate it 4.8 out of 5 on the US App Store (23,591 ratings) and 4.7 in France. This guide is published by Ember, a competing app.
Is MacroFactor free?
No, and the publisher is upfront about it. In the FAQ on the official app page, Stronger By Science says there is not, and never will be, a free version of MacroFactor. You can download the app at no cost from the App Store and Google Play, but it starts with a 7-day free trial, followed by an auto-renewing subscription.
The publisher ties this to its business model: no ads, no ad networks tracking you, data that is never sold, and full access to every feature as soon as you subscribe. So there is no “Premium” tier to unlock: during the trial and afterwards, you use the same app.
| Question | MacroFactor’s answer |
|---|---|
| Permanent free version | No, and none is planned |
| Free trial | 7 days, on iPhone and Android |
| Ads | None |
| Features included in the subscription | All of them |
| Devices | iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Android |
| Desktop version | Not for now |
Based on the MacroFactor page of the official website and the app’s App Store listing, checked on October 28, 2026.
You may come across “MacroFactor premium APK” files that promise the subscription for free. They do not come from the publisher, whose payments go only through the App Store and Google Play, and installing a modified app from outside the official stores puts your phone and the data you enter at risk. To try it without paying, the 7-day trial is enough.
How much does MacroFactor cost in 2026?
MacroFactor offers three lengths: one month, six months or one year. Its Help Center lists $11.99 a month, $47.99 per half year and $71.99 a year, and notes that prices vary with each country’s exchange rate and taxes. In Europe, the App Store’s list of in-app purchases shows the amounts in euros and kroner:
| App Store | 1 month | 6 months | 1 year | Annual plan per month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| United States | $11.99 | $47.99 | $71.99 | $6.00 |
| France | €11.99 or €12.49 | €48.99 | €73.99 | €6.17 |
| Spain | €11.99 or €12.49 | €48.99 | €73.99 | €6.17 |
| Germany | €11.99 or €12.49 | €48.99 | €73.99 | €6.17 |
| Norway | 129 kr | 519 kr | 769 kr | 64 kr |
Taken from the in-app purchases on MacroFactor’s App Store listings on October 28, 2026. Two monthly prices appear in the euro countries, with no indication of which one applies. The list also includes lower amounts with no explanation of their use: $9.99 a month and $59.99 a year in the US, €60.99 a year in France, €9.99 a month in Germany, 105 kr a month in Norway. Last column: Ember’s calculation (annual price divided by 12).
The gap between plans is large: paid for twelve months in a row, the monthly plan comes to $143.88 in the US, about double the $71.99 annual plan (Ember’s calculation). If you plan to track your food for several months, the annual plan is the cheapest option; for a shorter goal, the six-month plan works out to about $8 a month. The exact price always shows in the app before you buy.
MacroFactor Workouts: a second app, a second subscription
Stronger By Science also publishes MacroFactor Workouts, a strength training app: routines built around your goal, level and equipment, automatic load progression, rest timers and technique videos by Jeff Nippard. It is not part of the nutrition subscription. Each app can be bought on its own, or both together with an annual bundle.
In the US, Workouts costs the same as the nutrition app and the bundle is $89.99 a year. In Europe, the App Store lists Workouts slightly higher than the nutrition app:
| App Store | Workouts 1 month | Workouts 6 months | Workouts 1 year | Bundle of both apps (1 year) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| United States | $11.99 | $47.99 | $71.99 | $89.99 |
| France, Spain, Germany | €12.99 | €49.99 | €79.99 | €99.99 |
| Norway | 149 kr | 599 kr | 999 kr | 999 kr |
MacroFactor Workouts in-app purchases taken from the App Store on October 28, 2026; dollar prices confirmed by the MacroFactor Help Center. In Norway, the bundle and the Workouts-only annual plan are listed at the same price.
The bundle pays off as soon as you use both apps: in the US, two separate annual plans would cost $143.98, versus $89.99 for the bundle (Ember’s calculation). People who subscribed to the nutrition app before January 1, 2026 get free access to Workouts until January 12, 2027, as long as they keep their subscription.
Which languages is MacroFactor available in?
On the App Store listings for France, Spain, Germany, Norway and the US, MacroFactor lists two languages only: English and Japanese. Menus, weekly check-ins and in-app explanations are therefore in English for anyone in Europe.
A German version is on the way. In its 2026 annual report, updated on September 30, the publisher writes that MacroFactor will “soon” be available in German, bringing the app to three languages. French, Spanish and Norwegian have not been announced.
| Language | App interface as of October 28, 2026 |
|---|---|
| English | Yes |
| Japanese | Yes |
| German | Announced, not yet listed on the App Store |
| French | No |
| Spanish | No |
| Norwegian | No |
Languages listed on the App Store pages of MacroFactor and MacroFactor Workouts; German announced in the MacroFactor 2026 annual report.
The interface language does not stop you from finding your foods. According to the publisher, its database covers staple foods worldwide, and barcode support is excellent in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Japan, France and Spain, and improving in Germany. Norway is not on that list, so you will more often need the label scanner or your own custom foods. If you would rather compare several options first, our roundup of calorie counting apps covers the main ones.
What sets MacroFactor apart: expenditure calculated from your own data
Most calorie counters set your target once, using a formula that estimates your basal metabolic rate and activity. MacroFactor starts from that estimate, then corrects it with your own numbers. The principle, explained on its website, is energy balance: calories in minus the change in stored energy equals calories out. All you need to do is log what you eat and weigh yourself regularly.
Every week, a check-in recalculates your expenditure and adjusts your calorie and macro targets to the pace you chose, whether you want to lose, maintain or gain weight. The publisher stresses two points: the algorithm works just as well if you missed your targets, and the app shows no red numbers or warnings when you go over. Another deliberate choice: it does not use smartwatch or activity tracker data, which the publisher considers unreliable for estimating expenditure.
- Macro coaching
Three program modes (Coached, Collaborative and Manual), balanced, low-carb, keto or carb-focused plans, and different targets for different days, including fasting days.
- Food logging
Search across more than 1.36 million verified food entries, barcode and nutrition label scanning, speech-to-text logging, and recipe import from a link or a photo of a cookbook.
- AI photo logging
The AI tab analyzes a photo of your meal, with or without a written description, and fills a plate with foods you can edit before logging. The 2026 report adds several photos per meal and reading a restaurant menu.
- Body tracking
Smoothed weight trend, micronutrients, menstrual cycle, habits, body measurements and progress photos, with Apple Health and Google Fit sync.
The method comes with one condition: regular weigh-ins and a complete food log. If you only log every other meal, the calculated expenditure will be off, however good the algorithm is.
How do you cancel MacroFactor and get a refund?
MacroFactor does not handle payments itself: the trial and the subscription go through the App Store or Google Play, and that is where you cancel. The App Store listing states that the subscription renews automatically unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Another trap: deleting your account in the app erases your data but does not cancel your subscription.
- On iPhone or iPad
Open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Choose MacroFactor and tap Cancel Subscription. Inside the app, More > Subscriptions shows your plan and its renewal date.
- On Android
Open Google Play, tap your profile picture, then Payments and subscriptions and Subscriptions. Choose MacroFactor and cancel.
- Getting a refund
For an iPhone purchase, you request it from Apple through its support site: MacroFactor cannot refund Apple purchases. On Android, Google Play refunds on request within 48 hours of purchase, and the MacroFactor team can also refund you by email.
To switch from the nutrition app to the bundle with Workouts, there is no need to cancel first: you change plans in More > Subscription by choosing the Bundle option.
MacroFactor review: is it worth it, and for whom?
Ratings are high everywhere, with far more reviews in the US than in Europe. The publisher reports more than 600,000 users in September 2026, up from 185,000 two years earlier.
- Strengths
A target recalculated every week from your real data, fast logging (barcodes, labels, photos, voice), no ads and every feature in a single subscription.
- Limitations
No free version, an interface in English or Japanese only, no desktop version and a separate subscription for the training app. The method also asks you to weigh yourself often and log everything.
- Who is it for?
People who already track macros, want a target that adjusts itself and are ready to pay after one week. It is also worth a look when weight loss stalls: our guide to the weight loss plateau explains why your needs drop as your weight goes down.
| App Store | MacroFactor | MacroFactor Workouts |

If you mainly want to log meals quickly without a subscription, compare before you pay. Ember, the app that publishes this guide, estimates calories and macros from a photo or a sentence, with up to two AI analyses a day on its free plan.
