About TDEE
Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is the estimated number of calories your body burns over 24 hours. It combines the energy needed for vital functions at rest with the energy you use through everyday movement and exercise.
We first estimate your basal metabolic rate (BMR) with the Mifflin-St Jeor formula.
Men: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) - (5 × age) + 5
Women: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) - (5 × age) - 161
Your BMR is then multiplied by an activity coefficient to estimate your TDEE.
- Sedentary (1.2): little or no exercise
- Lightly active (1.375): exercise 1-3 days a week
- Moderately active (1.55): exercise 3-5 days a week
- Very active (1.725): intense exercise 6-7 days a week
TDEE is a starting point, not an exact prescription. Metabolism, body composition, medical conditions, medication, sleep and stress can all affect your real energy needs. Observe your progress over several weeks and adjust gradually if needed.
