Ember

Comparison updated on October 7, 2026

Looking for a Cal AI alternative? Ember vs Cal AI

Ember and Cal AI share the same idea: snap a meal instead of searching for every food. The differences are free access, intermittent fasting and the logging options around the photo.

Ember app screens showing calories, macros and a meal health score

The 30-second verdict

Ember is a better fit if you want to use AI meal analysis without a subscription, describe a meal in one sentence and track intermittent fasting in the same app. Cal AI is better suited if you also want to scan nutrition labels, use an Apple Watch and are happy to pay for a subscription after the trial.

Both apps produce estimates: no photo knows the exact portion weight or cooking oil. Compare how easily you can correct results and what you get without paying.

Strengths and limitations of each app

Ember

Ember focuses on meal logging. A photo or description generates an estimate of calories, protein, carbs and fat. You can correct foods, portions or preparation, then follow your day with water, steps, weight and fasting.

Strength
AI analysis you can use for free every day, plus built-in fasting tracking.
Good to know
Ember does not read nutrition labels and has no Apple Watch app.

Cal AI

Cal AI is a photo-first calorie counter acquired by MyFitnessPal in late 2025 while remaining a standalone app. It combines photos, barcodes, label scanning, descriptions and MyFitnessPal’s food database, with Apple Health and Google Fit sync.

Strength
Many ways to add a food and a large product database.
Good to know
After the 3-day free trial, the app runs on a subscription whose price can vary depending on the offer shown.
  • Free plan

Ember includes up to two AI analyses per day on its free plan, with no time limit. Cal AI offers a 3-day free trial, then a subscription. On the US App Store, its in-app purchases range from $2.99 to $29.99 depending on the offer. The subscription renews automatically, and deleting the app does not cancel it. Prices and offers may change.

  • Accuracy

Cal AI itself says it is about 80% accurate. In July 2026, NIH researchers presented a preliminary study of 102 meals: several photo-based calorie apps, including Cal AI, underestimated calories by 250 to 345 kcal per meal on average. Whatever app you use, check portions, sauces and cooking fats, and seek advice from a healthcare professional for medical needs.
