Cal AI review: cost and free version

What you get without paying, what the subscription costs in 2026, what the ratings say and how to cancel before you are charged.

Cal AI in 2026: free or paid, and is the app any good?

Published October 28, 2026 · By the Ember team

In short

  • Cal AI has no lasting free version: the app is free to download, offers a 3-day free trial, then a subscription. Its App Store listing states that meal analysis results require a subscription.

  • On the US App Store, its in-app purchases range from $2.99 to $29.99 depending on the offer shown, with no length listed by Apple. The trial renews automatically: cancel it at least 24 hours before it ends.

  • Users rate it 4.8 out of 5 in the US (more than 370,000 ratings) and 4.7 in France (more than 12,000 ratings).

  • Cal AI says it is about 80% accurate. A preliminary NIH study (102 meals) found that several apps, including Cal AI, underestimated meals by 250 to 345 kcal on average.

  • The app has belonged to MyFitnessPal since a deal closed in December 2025, but it remains a separate app. This guide is published by Ember, a competing app.

Is Cal AI free?

You download Cal AI, answer a series of questions about your weight, activity and goal, and the app builds your plan. The price question comes up when you try to log your first meal by photo. The App Store listing spells it out: food scanning analysis results require a subscription. The official FAQ confirms it indirectly: the + button you tap to log food opens the paywall screen.

What Cal AI gives you for free is therefore a 3-day trial, promoted on its website. It turns into a paid subscription unless you cancel in time. We found no mention of a free version you can use with no time limit, whether on the website, the App Store or the FAQ.

Taken from Cal AI’s App Store listing, the calai.app website, its FAQ (updated July 2026) and its terms of use (updated November 28, 2025), on October 28, 2026.

Bottom line: Cal AI is free for 3 days, not beyond. If you only want to try it, write down the trial end date on the day you start it.

How much does Cal AI cost in 2026?

Cal AI does not publish a price list. The price appears on the paywall screen, in the app, before you start the trial. The App Store listings still give a sense of scale, with the in-app purchases offered in each country. One quirk: almost all of them are named “Unlimited” and Apple does not show their length, so you cannot tell which one is a weekly, monthly or yearly plan.

App StoreCheapest offer“Unlimited Plan”Most expensive offer
France€2.99€22.99€44.99
United States$2.99$19.99$29.99
Spain€2.99€22.99€34.99
Germany€2.99€22.99€44.99
Norway39 kr249 kr399 kr

Taken from Cal AI’s App Store listings on October 28, 2026. The App Store shows 10 in-app purchases at most, with no length. A purchase named “Streak Restore” (€0.99, $0.99 or 9 kr) is left out of these ranges. The price actually offered appears in the app before you buy.

Before you confirm, check the length of the offer and the date of the first charge on the paywall screen, not just the amount. Two practical details from the FAQ: a subscription bought on iPhone does not carry over to Android (and vice versa), and Cal AI offers a family plan.

What do Cal AI reviews say?

On the App Store, Cal AI is very well rated in all five countries we checked, with 4.8 out of 5 in the US from 372,736 ratings and 4.7 in France from more than 12,000. The app is updated every week, according to its version history.

Strengths

Several ways to log a meal (photo, barcode, nutrition label, description), macros you can edit by hand, Apple Health and Google Fit sync, an Apple Watch app and the MyFitnessPal food database. Among the reviews featured on the US listing, one user names the barcode and nutrition label options as what makes the app “worth it”.

Limitations

No free version after the trial, no Norwegian version (the app comes in English and 14 other languages, including French, Spanish and German), iOS 18 or later on iPhone, and no import of your MyFitnessPal history. A recent review on the US listing also reports wrong sodium, fat and fiber values, even after a barcode scan.

An average rating does not tell you whether people rated the app during the trial or after months of paying. Read the most recent reviews, then judge it on your own meals during the 3-day trial.

Is Cal AI’s photo logging accurate?

Cal AI explains that your phone’s depth sensor estimates the food’s volume, then its AI works out the calories, protein, carbs and fat. In its own FAQ, the app says it is about 80% accurate and recommends good lighting and a well-framed plate.

An independent study gives a sense of scale. In July 2026, NIH researchers presented an analysis of 102 meals prepared and weighed in a metabolic kitchen at the NUTRITION 2026 meeting. The four apps tested, MyFitnessPal, LoseIt!, Cal AI and Appediet, underestimated calories by 250 to 345 kcal per meal on average, mostly because of fat (about 30 g too little). These are preliminary results, not yet published in a journal.

Who is behind Cal AI? The MyFitnessPal acquisition

Cal AI is published by Viral Development LLC and launched on the App Store in April 2024. Its founders, Zach Yadegari and Henry Langmack, were 19 at the time of the acquisition, according to TechCrunch. MyFitnessPal acquired Cal AI in a deal closed in December 2025 and announced on March 2, 2026, for an undisclosed amount. According to MyFitnessPal, the app had more than 15 million downloads at the time and over $30 million in annual revenue.

For you, this changes two things. Cal AI remains an independent app with its own subscription: paying for MyFitnessPal does not give you Cal AI, and the reverse is also true. On the other hand, Cal AI now relies on the MyFitnessPal food database (20 million foods), which helps with packaged products and manual searches.

How do you cancel Cal AI and get a refund?

You cannot cancel Cal AI from inside the app: it all goes through your phone’s settings. Deleting the app does not cancel the subscription, and you must cancel the free trial at least 24 hours before it ends to avoid the first charge.

On iPhone

Open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Choose Cal AI and tap Cancel Subscription. If there is no cancel button, the subscription is already cancelled.

On Android

Open Google Play, tap your profile icon, then Payments and subscriptions, and Subscriptions. Choose Cal AI and cancel.

For a refund

For an App Store purchase, Apple decides: sign in at reportaproblem.apple.com, choose “I’d like to”, then “Request a refund”. On Android, the request goes through Google Play. If you paid Cal AI directly, email its support team.

Cancelling during the trial means you are never charged; cancelling after the first payment only stops the next renewal. Apple usually answers a refund request within 24 to 48 hours.

Is Cal AI worth it?

Cal AI suits you if you want a photo-first counter that also reads nutrition labels, works on an Apple Watch and uses the MyFitnessPal database, and you do not mind a subscription. The 3-day trial is enough to see whether photo logging really saves you time.

If your main goal is to log meals by photo without subscribing, compare before you pay. Ember, the app that publishes this guide, includes up to two AI analyses a day on its free plan, with no time limit; on the other hand, it does not read nutrition labels and has no Apple Watch app. We cover the differences in our Ember vs Cal AI comparison.

Either way, check your portions with a kitchen scale now and then: that is what makes any app’s estimates useful.
