Is Yazio free? What’s free, what’s paid in 2026 (and the price of Yazio PRO)

Food diary, AI photo scan, fasting plans, recipes, detailed nutrients: what Yazio’s free version really lets you do, what you have to pay for, how much PRO costs by country, and how to get by without a subscription.

Is Yazio free? What you really get without paying

Published on October 22, 2026 · By the Ember team

In short

  • Yes, Yazio is free for the basics: a food diary, calories and macros, a database of more than 4 million foods, water, weight, 16:8 fasting and daily analysis, with ads.

  • The AI photo scan (free at launch in 2025, PRO-only since), the 3,000+ recipes, the other fasting plans, vitamin and mineral details and long-term statistics all require Yazio PRO.

  • In the US, the App Store lists PRO at $23.99 for 3 months, $34.99 for 6 months and $23.90 to $47.90 for 12 months depending on the offer (October 2026). There is no monthly plan: you pay the whole period upfront.

  • The 7-day free trial is only offered from time to time, on the website. To stay free, lean on saved meals, Quick Add or an ad-free alternative.

Yes, Yazio is free: what the basic version includes

Yazio is one of the most widely used nutrition apps in Europe. The German company, based in Erfurt, says it has passed 100 million users (a milestone reached in May 2025), and the app is rated 4.7 out of 5 on the US App Store from more than 51,000 ratings. The first piece of good news: you can use it without ever paying. Its press fact sheet is clear that the basic version, which includes “a limited selection” of its core features, is completely free.

In practice, the free version gives you the food diary, the heart of the app. You search for a food among more than 4 million items, pick the serving, and the calories, carbs, protein and fat are added to your day, measured against a goal based on your age, height, weight and activity. The diary also records water, weight and activities, and you can create your own foods and recipes. 16:8 fasting stays free, as does the daily analysis and syncing with Apple Health on iPhone or Health Connect on Android. Streaks, which reward consecutive days of tracking to keep you motivated, are open to everyone.

The trade-off: ads, and an app that often reminds you what you are missing. Yazio has run on a freemium model since November 2015, and the app regularly puts PRO features in front of you. For simple calorie tracking, the free version is plenty; it is when you want to log faster or dig into your data that you hit the paywall.

Yazio free vs PRO: the feature-by-feature table

Here is what each version includes in October 2026, based on Yazio’s official help center and its App Store listings. Unlike some competitors, Yazio has a single paid tier: PRO.

Sources: Yazio help center (“How does Yazio Pro support my goals?”, “Tutorial of the Yazio app”, supported apps and devices) and App Store listings, accessed in October 2026. The barcode scanner is not on the official list of PRO features, but some third-party reviews say it is limited on the free version: check in the app. Features may vary by country and app version.

The table makes the point: the free version can count, but almost everything that saves time or adds depth, from photo logging to long-term statistics, sits behind PRO. That model funds a team of more than 120 people and an in-house recipe library. For a full comparison with an app built around photographing and describing meals, see our Ember vs Yazio page.

Yazio’s AI photo scan: free at launch, paid today

This is the change that surprised users most. Yazio launched AI meal recognition in June 2025: you take a photo of your plate, and the AI detects the ingredients and suggests an estimate of portions and nutritional values. According to the help center, the feature “was initially available to all users for free”; it is now part of Yazio PRO. Without a subscription, you are back to searching food by food.

Yazio itself is careful about what a photo can do. Its help center says the recognition only provides “a rough estimate” and “cannot guarantee 100% accurate results”, and asks you to review and edit each entry, ingredients and quantities included. That is a limit shared by every app of this kind: a photo shows neither the cooking oil, nor the sauce hidden under the rice, nor the exact weight of a portion. We go through these limits, and how to reduce them, in our article on how accurate photo calorie counting is.

So if you used the photo scan for free in 2025, you did not imagine it: the feature has simply moved to the paid side. The move is nothing unusual in the industry, with MyFitnessPal for example putting its barcode scanner behind Premium back in 2022. It mostly changes the maths for people who chose Yazio precisely for that feature.

Fasting, recipes, nutrients: the other PRO-only features

Yazio is often described as a fasting app, and this is where the free version surprises people most. The app offers 20 intermittent fasting plans, from 14:10 to 5:2 and alternate-day fasting, but only 16:8 is free. For most beginners that is enough: it is the most widely practised method, and our intermittent fasting guide sums up what the research says about it. If you want to try 5:2 or freely adjust your fasting hours, though, you will need PRO.

The second big paid block is recipes. Yazio highlights more than 3,000 recipes created and tested by its team of nutrition experts, with vegetarian, vegan and low-carb filters, a cooking mode and grocery lists. They are PRO-only; you can, however, create and save your own recipes for free, which is enough to track your family favorites.

Finally, PRO deepens your tracking. The free version shows calories and the three macronutrients; PRO adds fatty acids, fiber, sugar, salt, vitamins and minerals, the Smart Food Rating, statistics by week, by month and for up to two years, and planning meals in advance. Automatic syncing with Garmin, Fitbit, Polar or Samsung Health, entering steps manually, “weekend calories” and mood tracking are also paid features.

How much is Yazio PRO in 2026? Prices by country and length

Yazio does not publish a price list: the price appears in the app or on the website when you subscribe, and it varies by country, subscription length and current promotions. Two rules apply everywhere. First, there is no monthly subscription: PRO comes in 3, 6 or 12-month plans depending on the country. Second, as the help center explains, the full amount is charged at the start of the period you choose, not month by month.

Country3 months6 months12 months
United States$23.99$34.99$23.90 to $47.90
United Kingdom£14.99 to £23.99£24.99£14.99 to £47.90
France€23.99 to €35.99Not shown€11.90 to €59.90
Germany€35.99€14.99€23.90 to €83.90
Spain€14.99 to €23.99Not shown€14.99 to €47.90
NorwayNOK 199 to NOK 510NOK 299NOK 199 to NOK 829

In-app purchases shown on each country’s App Store listing, accessed in October 2026. Apple only shows the most frequent purchases, some of them simply called “YAZIO PRO” with no length (from $11.90 to $32.99 in the US); a range means several offers coexist. Google Play and website prices may differ.

The gaps are large, and they mostly come down to promotions: Yazio very often discounts its annual plan. In the US, $47.90 a year works out at $3.99 a month, and $23.90 at about $1.99 a month, while the 3-month plan at $23.99 comes to about $8 a month. In the UK, £47.90 a year is also £3.99 a month. The annual plan is by far the best value, as long as you are sure you will use it all year. Before you confirm, check the length shown, the total price and the renewal date.

The 7-day free trial, promo codes and cancelling

Yazio offers a 7-day free PRO trial with full access, but not all the time: according to the help center, it is “offered occasionally” and only on the website, not in the app. Promo codes, too, can only be redeemed on the website, with a free account. In Germany, some offers go through partners: the health insurer BKK Werra-Meissner reimburses a first PRO purchase under certain conditions, and the corporate fitness program Hansefit gives access to 3 months of PRO.

How you cancel depends on where you subscribed. On iPhone, manage the subscription in the App Store by tapping your profile picture, then Subscriptions. On Android, go to Payments and subscriptions in the Google Play Store. If you paid on the website, log in to your Yazio account online, or open Profile, Settings, Account and Subscription in the app. Yazio spells it out: uninstalling the app or deleting your account does not cancel your subscription.

Cancelling does not trigger an automatic refund: you keep PRO until the end of the period you paid for, then the app switches back to the free version. For website purchases, you have a 14-day right of withdrawal; for purchases through the App Store or Google Play, refund requests go to Apple or Google, not to Yazio.

How to get the most out of Yazio for free: 6 tips

Save your regular meals

Create your usual breakfast or lunch salad once as a recipe, then add it in a few taps. It is the best free substitute for the photo scan.

Use Quick Add

At a restaurant or the office canteen, Quick Add lets you enter a description, calories and, if you know them, macros, without searching for every ingredient.

Prefer verified foods

Part of the database comes from users. Pick entries with a check mark, which Yazio has verified, and compare the values per 100 g with the label.

Stick with 16:8

16:8 fasting is free and it is also the easiest to keep up. There is no need to pay for a stricter plan before you have found your rhythm.

Go through Apple Health or Health Connect

Garmin and Fitbit sync are PRO-only, but many watches send their steps to Apple Health or Health Connect, which Yazio reads for free.

Wait for a promotion

If PRO tempts you, watch for an annual deal or the 7-day trial on the website, and set a reminder two days before it ends.

And if the photo scan is what you miss most, other apps keep part of it free. With Ember, you snap your plate or describe your meal in a sentence, with up to two free AI analyses a day, with no time limit and no ads; the app also tracks water, steps and weight, and includes an intermittent fasting timer.

What are the free alternatives to Yazio?

If free matters most to you, several apps leave open part of what Yazio keeps for PRO. None is free from end to end: each one draws its own line, summed up below.

AppWhat is freeWhat is paid
EmberMeal photo or description, up to 2 AI analyses a day with no time limit; no adsExtra analyses (optional subscription)
FddbDiary, search, barcode scanner, macros and micronutrients, no adsAI photo scan, fasting, recipes, wearables (Premium)
FatSecretDiary, search, barcode scanner, exercise and weightAdvanced meal planning, custom meal headings (Premium)
CronometerDiary, barcode scanner, detailed vitamin and mineral trackingPhoto and voice logging, ad-free (Gold)
MyFitnessPalDiary, database of 20 million+ foods, macrosBarcode scanner, photo scan, ad-free (Premium)

Based on App Store listings and official help centers, accessed in October 2026. Fddb is a German app whose database is strongest on products sold in Germany; its Apple Health sync becomes a Premium feature on January 1, 2027. The Cronometer app is only available in English.

The right choice depends on what you are missing. If it is the photo scan, Ember keeps part of it free, while Fddb and Cronometer keep it for their subscriptions. If you mostly buy packaged products in Germany or Austria, Fddb covers barcode scanning very well, for free and without ads. If you want to track vitamins and minerals in detail without paying, Cronometer is the most complete. And if you were weighing up MyFitnessPal, note that its barcode scanner has been paid since 2022: our article Is MyFitnessPal free? covers its free version in detail. Try two of them for a week each and keep the one you actually open.

Key takeaways

Yazio really is free for the basics: a food diary, calories, macros, water, weight, 16:8 fasting and daily analysis, as long as you accept ads and manual logging. The AI photo scan, free when it launched in 2025, is now PRO-only, as are Yazio’s own recipes, the other fasting plans and detailed statistics. PRO is never billed monthly: in the US, expect $23.90 to $47.90 for a year depending on the promotion, charged in one go, and remember that deleting the app cancels nothing. Above all, the tool matters less than consistency: a moderate calorie deficit that you keep up over time beats the best app abandoned after three weeks.

Frequently asked questions: is Yazio free?

Yes. The free version lets you keep a full food diary with calories and macros, track water, weight and activities, create your own foods and recipes, use 16:8 fasting and see your daily analysis. It shows ads, and the AI photo scan, Yazio’s recipes, the other fasting plans and detailed statistics are PRO-only.

Not anymore. Launched in June 2025, AI meal recognition was initially free for everyone; according to the official help center, it is now part of Yazio PRO. Yazio adds that the result is only a rough estimate that you should review and edit.

On the US App Store in October 2026, PRO is listed at $23.99 for 3 months, $34.99 for 6 months and $23.90 to $47.90 for 12 months, depending on the offer. In the UK, the 12-month plan ranges from £14.99 to £47.90. The $47.90 annual plan works out at $3.99 a month.

No. Yazio does not offer a monthly subscription: PRO comes in 3, 6 or 12-month plans depending on the country, and the help center says the full amount is charged at the start of the period. The subscription then renews automatically unless you cancel it.

Cancel where you subscribed: in the App Store on iPhone (profile picture, Subscriptions), under Payments and subscriptions on Google Play, or in your Yazio account on the website or in the app if you paid online. Uninstalling the app or deleting your account does not cancel the subscription.

Yazio is available in 20 languages, including English, French, German, Spanish and Norwegian, in more than 150 countries. The app language and the food database are separate settings, and the database covers 249 countries and territories.

It depends on what you miss. Ember lets you photograph or describe a meal, with up to two free AI analyses a day and no ads. Fddb and FatSecret offer free barcode scanning; Cronometer tracks vitamins and minerals in detail. Try two of them for a week each.

Photo logging without going PRO

Snap your meal or describe it in a sentence: Ember estimates the calories and macros. Up to 2 AI analyses a day for free, with no ads.
